The OHF proudly attended/supported the Open Door Gala for our Canadian Veterans via the Homes for Heroes Foundation, spearheaded by amazing patriot Mr. Dave Howard along with keynote speaker Col. Chris Hadfield, Canada’s nation treasure. Col. Hadfield is a heavily decorated Canadian astronaut, engineer, and military fighter/test pilot, whose many awards include the Order of Canada, the Meritorious Service Cross, and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. Col. Hadfield flew three space missions and was the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station. He spent five months in space, was the first Canadian to walk in space and was the first person to record a full-length music video on the International Space Station. He also spent 14 days living on the ocean floor! Over 400 guests attended this spectacular event which raised over $200,000 to support the new Winnipeg Kinsmen Veterans’ Village in Transcona with Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham presenting the Key to the City to Col. Chris Hadfield. Also, in attendance was Manitoba Premier the Honorable Heather Stefanson as well as many other highly decorated military personnel. OHF’s Oje Hart presented Col. Hadfield artwork he created of the legend at the Press Conference prior to the event, and Athena Hart who could not attend the event as she is currently in Australia on a work visa joined via Facetime where the lovely and kind Col. Hadfield happily greeted Athena and sang her Happy Birthday!! The highlight of the evening was Col. Hadfield’s speech but also his fabulous rendition of David Bowie’s Space Oddity that he sang and played his guitar to, along with the incredibly precisioned military band. What a blast!
